CARLOS (Olivier Assayas, 2010)

Masterfully crafted, as you’d expect, and consistently compelling. And naturally, when something successfully holds your attention for 5½ hours, it’s bound to leave you feeling satisfied and pleasantly woozy. Even if all it ultimately amounts to is 5½ hours of this-happened-then-this-happened-then-he-got-fat-and-went-to-prison.

PLEASE GIVE (Nicole Holofcenter, 2010)

A pall of insularity hangs over the film, and it doesn’t just come from the characters. The closing note is particularly offensive, and yet, in some sense, it’s the perfect capper.
