BRIDESMAIDS (Paul Feig, 2011)

****
USA
An all-girl anti-chick-flick evidently mounted as a challenge: can female comics plunge the hardcore gross-out depths of overgrown fratboy comedies? And also turn in a profit?

It's astounding that a venture so dubious delivers perhaps the most detailed, multifaceted woman to headline a multiplex farce in years. And even if the film didn't work so wonderfully [and profitably] as slapstick, it would still make for an absorbing, sharp-edged drama about rollercoaster female friendships and the bloodfights that go into BFF status.

(Also, it's a singularly relaxing feeling to emerge from a proudly lowbrow 3000+screen comedy which doesn't once resort to a cheap racist/homophobic/misogynist gag.)
